Women 18-44 Years Enrolled in Medicaid who Visited the Dentist in the Past year

Select a Zip Code
Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the percentage of women 18 to 44 years who are enrolled in Medicaid who were able to visit the dentist at least once in the previous year. These rates are compiled from Medicaid billing information.

Why is this important?

Good oral health is important before, during, and after pregnancy. Pregnant women may be at increased risk of periodontal disease. Poor oral health during pregnancy is associated with poor pregnancy and birth outcomes. Women living in poverty are less likely to visit the dentist, due in part to low Medicaid reimbursement for dentists. Dental visit rates for low-income women remain lower than rates in adults overall. Several programs were implemented between 2013 and 2016 to increase visits for low-income individuals, including the installation of a community dental clinic in Washtenaw County.
