Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows a count of suicide completions by year in Washtenaw County.

Why is this important?

Suicide attempts and suicide completions, especially among young people, are of concern in Washtenaw County. The Washtenaw County Health Department, Washtenaw County Community Mental Health and other community agencies and partners are working together to monitor and address both suicide attempts and completions with the goal of reversing this trend in Washtenaw County.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, presenting a major, preventable public health problem. More than 33,000 people die by suicide each year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but suicide deaths only account for part of the problem. An estimated 25 attempted suicides occur per every suicide death, and those who survive suicide may have serious injuries, in addition to having depression or other mental health conditions. Suicidality impacts whole communities. Men are about four times more likely than women to die by suicide, however, women are three times more likely than men to report attempting suicide. Suicide attempts and completions also take an emotional toll on family and friends.
